10 Things You Didn't Know About Natural Loofah

Ask most people what a loofah is made from and you’ll get some interesting answers. Sea sponge. Coral. Some kind of synthetic foam. In fact, the natural loofah is none of these things — it’s a vegetable. A dried one, to be precise. Here are 10 things worth knowing about one of nature’s most surprisingly useful plants.

1. It’s a vegetable, not a sea creature

The loofah plant (Luffa aegyptiaca) is a vigorously growing vine from the cucumber family. When the fruit ripens, the inside develops a dense network of fibres that — once harvested, peeled, deseeded, and dried — become the natural scrubber you know. It is, genuinely, a dried vegetable.

2. It’s been grown and used for generations

Our loofahs are harvested and processed by hand in Egypt, following a natural tradition passed down through generations. Nothing synthetic, nothing new — just a plant that humans have been putting to good use for a very long time.

3. It’s an excellent skin exfoliator

The fibrous texture of a natural loofah gently removes dead skin cells when used with soap or shower gel, leaving skin feeling clean and refreshed. Our LoofCo Body Loofah and Bath-Time Loofah are designed exactly for this purpose.

4. It’s one of the best washing-up pads you can buy

Our LoofCo Washing-Up Pad is our best-selling product — and for good reason. Its sponge-like texture absorbs water and soap well, while the fibrous surface tackles grease and food residue effectively. A simple, plastic-free swap for the kitchen sink.

5. It helps reduce microplastic pollution

Conventional plastic sponges and scourers shed microplastic particles every time they’re used, which wash down the drain and into waterways. A natural loofah produces none of these — it’s entirely plant-based from start to finish.

6. It works brilliantly on root vegetables

Loofah is ideal for scrubbing soil and debris from root vegetables. Our LoofCo Root Vegetable Scrubber softens in water and gently cleans fresh produce without damaging it — a mess-free alternative to scrubbing under the tap.

7. It’s useful around the house too

Beyond the sink and the shower, loofah can be used to scrub surfaces, sinks, and countertops. Our LoofCo Cleaning Pad is one of our most popular products for exactly this reason.

8. It’s 100% biodegradable and compostable

When your loofah eventually wears out, it goes straight on the compost heap. No landfill, no plastic waste — it returns to the earth as it came from it. The loofah plant also absorbs CO2 as it grows.

9. It lasts longer than you might expect

Kept clean and dry between uses, a LoofCo loofah will last for many months. We have customers still using their Washing-Up Pads after a year. The key is simple: rinse it well after use, wring out the excess water, and hang it up to air-dry from its string loop. You can also pop it in the washing machine — many of our customers do.

10. It supports traditional farming

Choosing a natural loofah supports the traditional farming and processing practices of communities who have grown and harvested this crop for generations. It’s a genuinely sustainable choice — for your home, and for the people who produce it.
