Why Your Bins Need a Good Scrub This Summer (And the Tool That Makes It Easy)

Hot weather and food waste are a bad combination. As temperatures rise, kitchen bins, food caddies, and recycling tubs can quickly become a source of unpleasant smells — and a magnet for bacteria. The good news? A proper scrub takes minutes with the right brush. That is exactly why we designed our Household Bin Brush!

The Summer Bin Problem

Heat accelerates everything — including the breakdown of food waste. What might take a week to start smelling in winter can turn unpleasant within a day or two in summer. The bins most affected are the ones we use most: kitchen bins, food waste caddies, recycling tubs, and outdoor bins.

A quick rinse under the tap isn't enough. Residue clings to the inside walls and lid, and that's where the smell — and bacteria — really builds up. You need to scrub it out properly.

What Makes a Good Bin Brush?

Not all brushes are up to the job. Here's what to look for:

  • A shape that gets into corners — flat sponges and cloths just push mess around. Our unique triangular brush head combines the idea shape and brush strength.
  • A sturdy handle — long enough to keep your hands away from the mess, strong enough to apply pressure
  • Tough bristles — soft bristles won't shift dried-on residue
  • Plastic-free if possible — a brush you feel good about using.

Meet our LoofCo Household Bin Brush

We designed our LoofCo Household Bin Brush for this job exactly. Here's why it works so well:

  • Natural coconut coir fibres — tough enough for heavy-duty scrubbing, powerful enough to shift dried-on grime
  • Sturdy wooden handle — comfortable grip that keeps your hands well away from the mess
  • Unique shape — gets right into the corners of bins and lids where residue hides
  • Versatile — also brilliant for large pots and outdoor cleaning tasks
  • Plastic-free and handmade in Sri Lanka — from sustainable natural materials, biodegradable fibres, and a recyclable handle

How to Clean Your Bin Properly

It takes less time than you'd think. Here's the method:

  1. Empty the bin or caddy fully
  2. Scrub the inside walls and lid with warm water and a little washing-up liquid
  3. Rinse thoroughly
  4. Hang to dry using the brush's hanging loop — don't leave it sitting in damp conditions
  5. For a deeper clean: soak the brush in hot water with baking soda, scrub, then dry thoroughly

Do this once a week through summer and you'll notice the difference immediately.LoofCo Household Bin Brush without packaging with a metal bin, black food compost bin
