Notes from the Sink: How to Clean Your Wheelie Bin with Ease

Every home has at least one wheelie bin. Most of us ignore them, except to fill them with rubbish, recycling and garden waste. However, your wheelie bins are an important part of your home cleaning routine — and also one of the hardest-to-clean items, right outside your front door. The good news? We have designed a brush - the LoofCo Wheelie Bin Brush, specifically for this task! So with the right approach, it's easier than you think.

Why Bother Cleaning Your Wheelie Bin?

A neglected wheelie bin is a breeding ground for bacteria, mould, and unpleasant odours. Regular cleaning keeps smells at bay, deters pests, and means you're not handling a germ-laden bin every collection day. It's one of those small habits that makes a big difference. In hot weather, it is even more important to keep on top of this job and keep smells at bay.

What You'll Need & Step-by-Step:

  • A garden hose or bucket of warm water
  • Your favourite natural cleaner
  • Wear rubber gloves if preferred
  • A LoofCo Wheelie Bin Brush
  1. Empty the bin completely — wait until after collection day.
  2. Rinse the inside with your hose to loosen any debris.
  3. Apply your cleaner — spray or pour a generous amount inside and on the lid.
  4. Scrub thoroughly using your Wheelie-Bin Brush, working from top to bottom. We designed the brush to be just the right length easily reach right down into corners of the wheelie bin and with enough coir bristle strength for a thorough clean and scrub.
  5. Rinse well and tip the bin upside down to drain and air dry.
  6. Don't forget the outside — give the body and wheels a quick wipe down too.
  7. After use, thoroughly wash and rinse Wheelie Bin Brush and hang to dry outside from handy string loop.

Beyond the Bin: Hard-to-Reach Outdoor Spots

Once you've got your cleaner and brush out, it's the perfect time to tackle other outdoor areas that are awkward to reach — think garden furniture legs, fence panels, patio corners, and the sides of your shed. A natural cleaner that's safe on surfaces and kind to the environment means you can use it freely outside without worrying about run-off into your garden. Always rinse and hang to dry after use, to prolong the life of your Wheelie Bin Brush.

How Often Should You Clean Your Wheelie Bin?

Aim for once a month in summer (when heat accelerates bacteria growth) and every 6–8 weeks in cooler months. A quick rinse after every collection keeps things manageable between deep cleans.

Small effort, big results — and a much more pleasant bin day. 🌿
